McVickar attended Columbia College, graduated ﬁrst in his class in 1804, and—staunch young Federalist that he was—eulogized the recently slain Alexander Hamilton in his valedictory speech. McVickar went on to study theology, was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1812, and that same year became rector of a church in Hyde Park, New York. 21 For our purposes here, McVickar is most valuable as a writer of some of the earliest and pithiest sources on Christian political economy.
